Empathy Atlas
Accessibility
Last updated July 2026
Empathy Atlas is for everyone, so it has to be usable by everyone. We aim to meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA across the site, and we treat accessibility as part of building the product, not an afterthought.
What we build for
- Semantic HTML and a clear heading structure on every page.
- Full keyboard operation, with a visible focus indicator.
- Dialogs that trap focus, close on Escape, and return focus when dismissed.
- Labels tied to every form field, and text alternatives for images.
- Color contrast that meets AA, and no meaning carried by color alone.
- Reduced-motion support for animations and transitions.
Where we are honest
The atlas includes interactive maps and data visualizations, which are some of the hardest things to make fully accessible. We are actively improving them, and there may be places that fall short today.
Tell us about a barrier
If something on the site is hard or impossible to use, we want to fix it. Email hello@empathyatlas.org and tell us what happened and where, or reach us through the contact page. We will respond and work with you.
