Empathy Atlas holds people’s stories, so we treat your information with care. This page explains what we collect, why, and the control you have over it. It reflects how the product works today and will grow with it.
Exploring without an account
You can explore the experiences, map a line, and view the community atlas without an account. We do not require you to sign in to look around.
Creating an account
To contribute — to save or share a line, or join a community — you create an account with Google, Apple, LinkedIn, or an email magic link. Authentication is handled by our infrastructure provider (Supabase). We store your email address and an account identifier so your contributions stay yours.
What you choose to add
When you build a line you add places, birth decades, and kinds of work across generations. You decide whether to save or share it. When you share, you set the audience (the public or a community you belong to), the location precision, and whether your name is shown. Places are never stored more precisely than a postal code.
Location search
Searching for a place uses a third-party geocoding service (HERE) to turn what you type into coordinates so it can be mapped. We store the coordinate of a place you choose to save, at the precision you set.
Suggestions
If you suggest a date for the calendar of freedom, we store the text you submit so we can review it.
Cookies
We use a session cookie to keep you signed in. We do not use advertising trackers.
What we do not do
We do not sell your personal information.
Your control
You can edit or delete your own lines, and remove a line you shared from a community. To request deletion of your account or data, email hello@empathyatlas.org.
